Erotic haiku; a gentle workshop.

19syllablesConference Room 2

Brief history of the art form.

The rules, and feeling free to break them.
Some examples that I like and that I think are particularly successful.
Some less successful ones, and the reasons I feel they are not so powerful.
Some prompts. I will collect 5 and 7 syllable phrases for people to springboard from.
If the group's not too big, try to do a chain haiku when we each write from the previous person's haiku (traditional Japanese technique).

Clits, cunts and cocks: the language of anatomy

The Other LivvyConference Room 2

I intend to discuss the language used to describe sexual anatomy and how these words can be used in different contexts - literary, educational and erotic.

Outside of writing, I have a medical background, including a BSc in Anatomy, and I would use this knowledge to start with an introduction on technical and medically accurate language for our anatomy with a short recap of where these structures are and how they fit together. I expect that for the majority of attendees this will be revision but there are some people who write sex who still talk of penetrating the womb who I want to gently correct at the beginning!

From here, I would move on to talk about how rarely this medical language is used accurately, allowing a brief discussion of the vulva/vagina debate, and how it is important to match your language to your audience, ie perhaps more technical in sex ed writing and more emotive or evocative in a personal essay.

The main topic of my session would then follow - a discussion about how language can make you feel and how important this is in erotica. I would give examples of what I felt were effective and ineffective uses from erotica (cock vs dick vs member, cunt vs pussy vs sex etc) and use these to prompt discussions about how anatomical descriptions can enhance or damage the flow of a story. Does the story need hard hitting accuracy or bold descriptions, or would a gentle euphemism actually work better? Why are some words more acceptable to some audiences than others?

The Value of Feedback

Marie RebelleConference Room 3

Commenting on blog posts is not the same as giving feedback. Sometimes writers ask for feedback on their stories, wanting to know how they can improve their writing, what worked in the story and what didn't. Feedback in a competition such as the Smut Marathon is highly valued. Why? Because not only the writer of the story, but other writers can learn from the feedback. Even the writer of the feedback learns from analyzing a story and putting into words what could be improved. This session will look at the correct ways to give feedback, and the importance of giving constructive feedback on someone else's creative work.

Practical photography session

Andrew and MonikaConference Room 2

Rather than talking I would like to take a group through something more practical. Working with Godemiche (Monika is a gifted photographer) we would split the group into two. One group would be looking at how to take really great product photos (Godemiche will supply all the toys, and we will get some extra props). The other half of the group will be looking at photographing a model. A simple introduction on how to work with studio lights to give a dramatic portrait.

They can bring their own camera or we will have ours all ready to go. We can find a model who is willing to wear latex (I know a few and I'm sure you do).

Sat 2:35 pm - 3:20 pm

Flying Solo - or a social and cultural history of masturbation

Eve RayConference Room 3

I will start with the present - why masturbation is good for you, whatever genitalia you have, and this bit can involve some audience participation, what do we all get it of it? Then I will move on the the issue of the stigma and taboo surrounding so-called self abuse (and "wanker" is't a term of endearment is it?) and look at the history of how masturbation has come to be stigmatized, both through religion (Christianity mainly) ,and medical pseudoscience. I will argue that this is mainly a Western cultural phenomenon and also relatively recent (last 250 years or so).I will illustrate with examples, some of which are quite amusing, (it is not my intention that the session will be too heavy). On the way I will show that the religious taboo is based on a falsification of the .Old Testament story of Onan, whose sin was not actually masturbation and ask how it is that female masturbation was largely ignored over the years and the significance of this . To finish up I will look at how sex positive people can enjoy it in a range of ways (including in BDSM contexts) and involve the audience again, before giving a quick lug for both Tabitha's Thirty Day Orgasm Fun and Masturbation Monday.

Crafting Erotic Fiction: Balancing Realism & Fantasy

Violet GreyConference Room 4

Does fantasy imitate reality? Or reality imitate fantasy?

This is what I wish to speak about in session: How to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality in erotic fiction, so writers can craft a story that embodies the two.
Readers of the genre (and its many subgenres) want escapism and fantasy, but some also want real life as a foundation for their fantasies. How can a writer accomplish this and craft a story that has a foot in each camp?

In this session, I will be using my knowledge obtained in a MA in Creative writing, and my experience as an erotica and sex blogger, to speak with attendees about how to craft a solid erotic concept. This will include how to build relatable characters and plots, character development and various writing techniques (including some myth-busting regarding this) that can be used to create, flesh out and build your stories.

This will also cover: doing thorough research into topics you wish to write about (i.e. BDSM, LGBTQ+ characters, characters with disability etc.) and where erotic fiction writers can draw inspiration (reading materials of multiple genres, audio & visual erotica and porn, music, IRL experiences etc.)

The balance between realism and fantasy in erotic fiction has been debated for a long time. I believe I can use my qualifications and experience to speak to other writers who wish to expand their knowledge and writing experience, and build confidence in a genre that can be difficult to find one's feet. As well, for the more experienced writers, I hope this can be used to share more writing knowledge with them, thus building more on their writing foundations, if it fits their style and creative process.

Ideally, the presentation will be done with time open for any questions and answers afterwards, in keeping with the allotted time Eroticon gives.

Orgies! Orgies! We Want Orgies! Sex in Greek and Roman Mythology

Aimee MarouxConference Room 2

Sex in mythology can be weird. Loki gets pregnant by a horse. Zeus takes most of his lovers in animal shape. But why? Sex is maybe the most relatable thing in human existence and stories about sex - even the weird sex - will bring us closer to our forebears.

Kristan XConference Room 3

The talk will start with a brief intro to interactive fiction in general, a little history, and a look at the genre of adult interactive fiction. I'll call out some of the better examples, and show that it can be more than just vulgar smut.

I'll then cover several simple (mostly free) tools that can used to create and publish interactive pieces. I'll demonstrate these, and give some tips designed to help anyone used to writing ordinary fiction to create great interactive pieces.

Finally I'll cover the means by which anyone can publish and sell their finished pieces, and give some tips on how to make money from writing interactive erotic fiction.

For this talk, a projector or large screen to which a laptop can be connected would be useful.

Responsible Smutting and the Eternal Triangle of Consent

Jayne RenaultConference Room 3

In this session, I want to highlight the power and subsequent ethical
responsibility of today’s erotica writers. The overarching theme of the
session is consent, including consent between characters on the page, as
well as between the author and their audience, and between a submitting
writer and their prospective editor.
I will touch on how consent is established between characters, why
that is important, and how nuanced it can be; what editors mean when
they request that it be established; dispel the myths that this
insistence on enthusiastic consent is a mood-killer. I will also provide
tips on how authors might go about self-evaluating their work, and how
to court an editor, all from the perspective of a full-time erotica
editor.

Show me the money: how to make a living from sex writing

Girl on the NetConference Room 2

At some point in 2019 the fabulous Cara Thereon asked ‘How does one get to the point where they say they’re going to do some cool endeavor and people just get on board and throw money at them?’ The bad news is that apart from a very few lucky people, most of us don’t ever get to that point. But most of us can get to the point where our sexy projects sustain themselves if we understand where the money is, and how to demonstrate that our work deserves to have some of it.

This session will give you an overview of how to establish a solid foundation of paid-for work, across a few different channels/income streams, and then build on the channels which work for you with the aim of turning your awesome sex writing into a full-time job.

We’ll cover: a number of different ways you can make money from your work, how best to prioritise and price your work, as well as GOTN’s trademark irritatingly-chirpy motivational stuff which will leave you confident that you can do this too. Because you absolutely can, you total hero.
