Why do we like this stuff?

Blake (AKA Pandora)Conference Room 2

Where do our fantasies come from? Why does this particular thing turn me on so much? How does trauma fit into all this? All too often, these questions are asked in a pathologising way. We don't owe anyone an explanation for our turn-ons. But understanding our sexual desires - and those of the characters we create - can be a powerful way of getting to know hidden aspects of ourselves. In this session we'll tackle some of the harmful ideas which attempt to "explain" our more unusual turn-ons, and collaborate to create a list of stigmatising tropes to avoid in erotic writing. From there we'll take a curious, celebratory dive into recent theories of erotic development to better understand how our sexual tastes are formed.

Forgetting shame and remembering your slutty self

Topher TaylorConference Room 2

  • Beginning by acknowledging the audience of writers and readers. Giving credit to the fact that it was women who inspired me sexually. Not queer men… women! I want to give thanks and credit to the room who inspired and educated me
  • How growing up with 'sluts' inspired me. The lower-working-class 'sluts' of South London accepted me and welcomed my desires and curiosities - because they didn't deny their sexuality
  • Talking about the context of my self-loathing as a youth and how this paid into my internalised shame as an adult. I only began to felt free talking 'slut talk' in my mid-to-late twenties, due to years of internal battles
  • How being open and vulnerable opened up career opportunities in media
  • The best mindset to write in
  • If it makes you cringe and you second guess it - IT HAS TO BE IN YOUR WRITING
  • Allow yourself to have ego in print and grant yourself permission to admit to your own desirability
  • Promoting your writing organically on social media

Sat 11:05 am - 11:55 am

The importance of inclusive language around all things sex

Dee / S3xtheorywithdeeConference Room 3

A session on how to make your content inclusive to all genders and sexualities, covering inclusive language, pronouns, and the complexity of labels, viewing the genitalia, sexual acts etc beyond the binary and how we can best affirm all people whilst still educating on certain topics or making something sexy. For example, rather than gendering genitalia or a certain aspect of a person, we can use more inclusive language that means everyone reading can see themselves in it. Plus the importance of avoiding gender stereotypes and using affirming language / positions for trans folks etc.

Keeping content creators safe from platforms' gaze: findings from research and 'algorithmic gossips'

Blogger on PoleConference Room 2

Content creators who post nudity, sex education, sexuality, sex work and sexual expression are increasingly under threat of platform censorship via content deletion and outright de-platforming. Spaces for our content online are shrinking, and it's increasingly tricky to reach new audiences and... you know... to even make a living. Using Dr Sophie Bishop's notion of “algorithmic gossip” - or the shared knowledge about platform processes - as well as findings from my own academic research on content moderation and platform governance, I am putting forward a session to empower sexy content creators to stay safe from and deal with censorship, sprinkling it with some personal experience gained through my own brushes with shadowbanning, de-platforming and meetings with platform workers. .

How To Perform Your Work

Girl on the NetConference Room 3

[This is a workshop rather than a talk, so it will have interactive elements. Those elements will only be done on a strictly consensual basis, so you won't be called on to read aloud if you'd prefer to just listen and observe. However, joining in is strongly encouraged and if you're up for that, please come equipped with one of your favourite sexy pieces either saved on your phone or available via a link] Performing your work is not the same as reading your work. As writers we're used to seeing our words on the page, but adding tone, rhythm and performance adds a whole extra dimension. This workshop aims to give a grounding in how to perform your work to best show it off, what equipment you need to record it if you'd like to, and why these things are increasingly valuable in the erotic writing space. Intro will cover: - why performance/audio can enhance your work, make it more accessible and help to build your audience - where to sell your work (and how much to charge) if you want to make extra money by repurposing current stories as audio Then the bulk of the session will cover practical information including: - how to edit and adapt stories for performance rather than reading - equipment (recording and editing) - how to perform rather than simply read. Pace, tone, emphasis and some erotica-specific tips (for example, making the most of your 'cum-trigger' moments)

Western audience are finally getting shows with queer leads and the eroticism of Teratophillia like Helluva Boss and manga like MADK is finally making its way to us.

The history of sex in mainstream Hollywood movies: the battle between erotic expression, conservative values and the ratings system

The Other LivvyConference Room 2

With all forms of art, it does not take long from the development of the style or technology for artists to produce works that include sex, erotica and expressions of desire, and so it was with motion pictures. Sex has been present on screen since the beginning of movie making, from 1896’s The Kiss right up to the current day, but it has also been a source of fear and trepidation for almost as long. Were movies able to corrupt society? Should they be controlled? This conflict between erotic expression and changing conservative values led to the formation of the restrictive Hays Code between 1934 and 1968 that prevented any sexual or ‘immoral’ content and later Hollywood’s MPAA ratings systems and UK’s BBFC ratings that tried to limit and guide what could be seen on screen. How has this affected the sex that we see in movies? And what can this say about society at large? Join me as we delve deeper into this fascinating and illicit topic

Write Bodies That Don't Follow the Rules

Lou KaneConference Room 3

Erotica requires us to sit with the human body. To write what it's capable of alone, with one person, with many. So, what do we do with bodies that exist outside the bounds of expectation? Bodies with clits that are cocks? Vaginas that are simply second holes? Genitalia that refuses naming? We write around it and through it and with it. This session will look at how, to first, shed the notion that bodies must follow rules (if a character believes they have a cock, then by god, they have a cock). We'll then look at how to actually write sex that enables characters to inhabit the reality that works best for them and their body. Prompts will be provided to empower attendees to practice writing fuller characters and more interesting sex
